Seven Terraces and the Kebaya Restaurant |
It was exciting to finally be making it to Kebaya Restaurant. It is a Baba Nyonya Malay restaurant. Hard to choose the best, but Kebaya was among our favorites.
Dinner is Served |
Kebaya is part of the Seven Terraces Hotel, which are beautifully and extensively renovated old terrace houses. Built in the late 19th century, the renovated Seven Terraces is a contiguous row of Anglo-Chinese terrace houses located just behind the Goddess of Mercy Temple. Historically, these homes were a redevelopment of the original buildings circa 1893.
Kebaya Dining Room |
We were seated in a beautiful dining room and started with a much needed refreshment and ordered a very good California Sauvignon Blanc. The printed menu showed seven appetizer dishes, seven main courses (plus four vegetables) and seven desserts. We each chose four dishes each so we were able to taste 8 wonderful examples of Peranakan foods between the two of us.
A Few More Dishes |
Peranakan Chinese or Straits-born Chinese are the descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to the Malay archipelago including British Malaya and Dutch East Indies between the 15th and 17th centuries. Members of this community in Malaysia address themselves as "Baba Nyonya". Nyonya is the term for the women and Baba for the men.
Seven Terraces at Night |
Kebaya’s chefs created a wonderful menu of classic Straits Chinese Nyonya dishes. They have refined these using French cooking techniques and innovative produce to deliver surprising new twists on this already fascinating cuisine. The effect is simple, delicious full of flavor and dazzling. A four-course menu of entrée, main course, vegetables and dessert is served in Chinese style to allow guests to share the dishes. The food was fantastic!
Since Kebaya’s opening, it has developed an excellent reputation for refined Baba-Nyonya food with the kitchen placing strong emphasis on seasonal ingredients in it’s cooking), as well as its delightful décor and impeccable service. It was fantastic!
Highly recommended!
